Hydraulic Anchor Grapple

Downhole Tool

Product Overview

The Hydraulic Anchor (Grapple) is a hydraulic actuated downhole positioning anchor tool specially developed for coiled tubing heavy workover intervention operations. It can provide a stable positive fixed anchor point at any arbitrary depth/position within the tubing or casing wellbore, cooperating with other downhole functional tools to realize torque-bearing positioning for cutting, milling, plug grinding and junk fishing heavy-load operations.

The anchor is actuated by circulating hydraulic fluid from surface pump. When pump flow rate reaches setting threshold, internal hydraulic piston drives the annular grapple slips to expand outward and fully engage against the inner wall of tubing/casing, realizing mechanical anchoring locking. The tool features a self-locking structural design: after the grapple slips fully bite the pipe wall, no additional tensile load or continuous hydraulic pressure is required to maintain stable anchoring status, which effectively avoids tool slipping or retraction during high-torque rotary downhole construction.

After finishing all downhole work procedures, the unset operation is simple and convenient: reduce surface pump circulation flow rate to release hydraulic actuating pressure, then apply slight upward lifting weight on coiled tubing string; the slack upward tension is enough to retract the grapple slips and fully close the hydraulic anchor, so the entire tool string can be tripped out of the well smoothly. The tool body adopts high-strength thickened alloy structure with excellent torque through capability, capable of bearing large rotary torque output from downhole motors during milling and cutting operations.

Two complete service grades are supplied to adapt diverse reservoir environments: STD standard grade for conventional sweet oil wells without hydrogen sulfide corrosive media; H₂S sour service grade manufactured with sulfur-resistant alloy to adapt high-H₂S corrosive sour gas well downhole working conditions.

The standardized product lineup covers outer diameter sizes ranging from 1-3/4" to 3-1/2", with matched maximum anchor extension range, overall make-up length specifications, equipped with standard 1" AMMT, 1-1/2" AMMT, 2-3/8" PAC and NC26 bottom connection threads for universal compatibility with mainstream coiled tubing connectors and heavy workover downhole service tools. Custom outer diameter, maximum grapple extension range and anti-sulfur passivation coatings are available upon customer technical drawing submission.

Core Features & Advantages

Full Well Depth Arbitrary Position Anchoring Function: Hydraulic actuated grapple anchor can form a reliable fixed anchor point at any depth inside tubing or casing wellbore, without limiting anchoring position to specific casing coupling or nipple sections, greatly improving the flexibility of downhole heavy workover construction layout.

Self-Locking Stable Anchoring Design Without Extra Load Demand: After hydraulic expansion grapple slips fully bite the pipe inner wall, the tool forms mechanical self-locking state. No continuous hydraulic circulating pressure or additional upward tensile load needs to be maintained during construction, eliminating hidden risks of anchor slip or retraction caused by load fluctuation.

Simple Pull-Release Unset Mechanism: Work completion unset operation has low construction threshold: only need to reduce surface pump flow rate to release hydraulic setting pressure, then lift coiled tubing string with slight slack weight; upward pulling force can retract grapple slips to close the anchor completely, realizing convenient tool string tripping without complex releasing pump ball or shear screw release structure.

High Torque Through Bearing Structural Design: The main body, grapple slip carrier and internal hydraulic transmission components adopt optimized thickened high-strength alloy torque transmission structure, with powerful torque through capability, capable of stably bearing large rotary torque generated by downhole power motors during casing cutting, hard formation milling and junk fishing heavy-load construction, avoiding structural deformation or anchoring failure under high torque load.

Dual Working Condition Grade Configuration: STD standard version applies to conventional sweet oilfield non-corrosive working environments; H₂S sour service version adopts sulfur-resistant alloy base material and professional anti-sulfur passivation coating to resist hydrogen sulfide corrosion in harsh sour gas well heavy workover conditions.

Full Outer Diameter Size Compatibility: Standard product series covers 1-3/4", 1-3/4", 2-1/8", 2-7/8", 3-1/8" and 3-1/2" outer diameter specifications, fully compatible with global mainstream medium-size coiled tubing assemblies for all heavy-load cutting, milling and fishing intervention anchoring demands.

Multi-Type Standard Thread Compatibility: All product models are equipped with universal 1" AMMT, 1-1/2" AMMT, 2-3/8" PAC and NC26 bottom connection threads, realizing seamless assembly with global mainstream coiled tubing bottom-hole assemblies without extra conversion subs.

Precision CNC High-Strength Alloy Manufacturing: Adopts precision CNC machining integral tool body, hydraulic piston assembly, grapple slip sets and torque transmission matching components, featuring outstanding high-torque load resistance, high-pressure fluid erosion resistance and structural stability, extending long-term continuous heavy-load downhole positioning service life.

FAQ

Q1: What is the core function of a Hydraulic Anchor (Grapple)?
The Hydraulic Anchor (Grapple) is a hydraulic actuated coiled tubing downhole positioning anchor sub. It can be set at any arbitrary depth in tubing/casing by surface circulating fluid pressure, expanding annular grapple slips to bite pipe wall for fixed anchoring. It features self-locking structure that keeps stable without extra tension or pressure after setting, powerful high torque through capability for rotary milling/cutting/fishing. After work, simply reduce pump flow rate and lift CT string to retract slips and unset the tool easily.

Q2: What three core structural advantages does this hydraulic anchor grapple own?
1. Arbitrary full well depth anchoring capability, hydraulic drive enables fixed anchor point at any position inside wellbore, not limited to specific casing nipples or couplings, greatly improving heavy workover construction flexibility; 2. Self-locking stable anchoring design, after grapple slips fully engage pipe wall, mechanical self-locking takes effect, no continuous hydraulic pressure or additional tensile load required during construction, eliminating anchor slip risks caused by load fluctuation; 3. Simple pull-release unset mechanism, low operation threshold: reduce pump flow pressure then slightly lift coiled tubing string, slack upward pulling force can retract grapple slips to close anchor completely for smooth tripping out of well.

Q3: What outer diameter sizes do these hydraulic anchor grapples support?
Our standard production lineup fully covers outer diameters: 1-3/4", 2-1/8", 2-7/8", 3-1/8" and 3-1/2". All models adopt universal 1" AMMT, 1-1/2" AMMT, 2-3/8" PAC and NC26 bottom connection threads compatible with global mainstream coiled tubing connector assemblies.

Q4: What is the difference between STD standard grade and H₂S sour service grade?
STD standard grade is manufactured for conventional sweet oil wells without hydrogen sulfide corrosive fluid. H₂S sour service grade adopts sulfur-resistant alloy substrate and special anti-sulfur passivation coating to resist chemical corrosion in high-H₂S sour gas well environments.

Q5: What is the standard production lead time for bulk purchase orders?
All standard PN part numbers are kept in factory inventory, goods can be delivered within 7–15 working days. Customized hydraulic anchor grapples with special outer diameters or custom maximum grapple extension ranges require 20–35 working days production cycle, subject to total order quantity.
